Things Dustin liked the mostest

Favorite Character

Naturally, Sarah is my favorite character, which is the whole reason this book was written. I loved her in the first Arachnomancer book and wanted to explore her character and history.

But choosing the protagonist is cheating.

No cheating!

I would say my favorite character is a toss-up between Niko and Adus, which might be a surprise to you. Adus barely makes an introduction, but I think she’s hilarious.

If you haven’t read Misadventures in Fairyland, you should. You’ll see why the green-haired girl—the best scribbler of logic this side of heavens’ Ring—is a fun character.

Favorite Scene

Hmm, it’s hard to say. I think I have favorite moments over scenes. But if I had to choose a whole scene, it would have to be Sarah’s debut at the brothel.

I love how nervous she is while looking absolutely stunning in her dress and makeup. We start to see Sarah’s mask form, where she gives into this persona she’s building for herself as not the bookworm but the badass.

The scene really drew me in. I was just as anxious as she was, hoping everything went well and then being delighted with her flawless execution.

Favorite Interaction

There are many to choose from! Sixy being forced to sell his panty collection, Byron mistaking Sarah’s request for his baton as a sexual innuendo, the happily hogtied man in Sarah’s room, and the potion salesman who turns into a bear, to name a few.

It’s hard to pick a favorite. But here’s one that made me laugh recently. This happens just after Sarah steps out from the challenge rooms to discover everyone racing to evacuate the center of the realm. The "her" in the opening paragraph is the owner of The Weenie Express food cart.

Naked hotdogs made their great escape from her cart, wiggling free into the air and pelting people as she rushed past. A very befitting sign, clattering against the side, read, The Weenie Express.

Sarah caught a hotdog.

The man holding her stub eyed her.

She made an offer to him.

He politely declined.

All the other exchanges are dialogue-heavy. This one is silent and hilarious. It’s made all the better because of that first day when she desperately wanted a hotdog and failed to get one.

Favorite Skill

Most of Sarah’s skills fall into general categories we see in most games: attack, defense, heal. Charm, on the other hand, is not as common, and I think it would make for a fun game mechanic, especially as a solo player.

It’s also kind of overpowered, but balanced by the fact that it can only be used on neutral mobs. The more I think about it, the more I realize that Charm is Sarah's MVS—Most Valuable Skill. She'd have died against the Young Stone Elementals, the Feenicoppers, the Daeossis, and the Corrignaters without it.

Well then, it's a good thing she had it!

Favorite Word

Hmm, probably “the.”

If you look at it for too long or say it too many times, it . . . changes. It’s truly a magical word. And I use it all the time. ;)
